MOST VALUABLE PLAYER Last year's league MVP remains the franchise's foundation. Dirk Nowitzki led the team in scoring (23.6), rebounding (8.6) and heart. His playoff flop a year ago wasn't repeated during the season or the first round against New Orleans. If the rest of the team cared as much as Nowitzki, the Mavs would still be playing.
MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER Josh Howard, hands down, takes home this (dis)honor with a selfish and confusing pattern of behavior late in the season. Not only did the one-time All-Star struggle to fit into the Jason Kidd-led offense, but his admission of marijuana use and decision to throw a birthday party after losing Game 4 puzzled/angered the coaching staff and several of his teammates.
FREE AGENT FOCUS In need of a young and athletic swingman, the team has strong interest in unrestricted free agent Antoine Wright. Reserve point guard Jose Barea, a restricted free agent, is another team favorite. The future is more unclear for free agents Devean George, Eddie Jones (player option), Juwan Howard, Malik Allen, Jamaal Magloire and Tyronn Lue.
PLAYER NOTES
--F Dirk Nowitzki knew after two first-round exits, not to mention the Finals meltdown in 2006, a change was coming at the top. As much as he appreciated the strides made under Avery Johnson, Nowitzki acknowledged it was time for a different voice.
"In our business, it's always the coach," Nowitzki said. "You can't fire 15 players, so that's what always is going to end. Was it a time for a change? I guess. We lost this year. We didn't play up to our capabilities, so things are always going to fall back on the coach. I think he's done a great job for us and for this franchise."
--G Jason Terry realizes that no one is safe going into next season, but he still believes that the Mavs have enough to complete in a conference that should be even better next season.
"You're a little concerned, but if you look at the nucleus we have, we're not real young, but we're young enough to compete," Terry said. "The West is getting tougher, though, so we are going to have to make some improvements. What those are right now, it's too early to say. Like I said, it's going to start with trying to fill Avery Johnson's shoes."
--F Brandon Bass established himself in the league with a solid season and superb playoff run. The bruising power forward was an offseason find who figures to be a prominent part of the future.
"This was really a positive season for me," Bass said. "I just wish we could have gone farther as a unit in the playoffs and really show what we were capable of doing."

I like the hire. I think Avery is an insprirational coach, but I'm not sure he has enough of the X's and O's to get the Mavericks over the hump. Now it's all about how Donnie Nelson can mold the roster this off-season. Can he work some Magic and put the Mavs back o

god im sick and tired of seeing all these other fans come in here and throw their little two cents in about our situation.... No one cares what a Lakers fan has to say, and I REALLY dont wanna hear what a Spurs fan has to say. This is our situation not yalls, stay out of it no

I hope you guys don't mind me posting here (I'm a Pacers fan), but this is my take on the Mavs:
I think firing Avery Johnson was the right move, because I've always found his coaching style to be suspect. Granted this doesn't solve all of the team's problems, but Avery certainly didn't help things t
I can see that sman1965 bothers almost every team on their message board. While trash talking is fun, just seeing this guys posts makes me fell like I am back in the 3rd grade.
I am proposing a boycott of any thread he starts, and to any posts he makes on other threads as well...
Maybe he will start to talk smart sports conversation or maybe he will jus
To get more respect. I see so many posts on these boards and in blogs here that discount him over and over again. Have the Mavs been successful in the Playoffs the past 2 years??? No but it's not all his fault. And to call him old. The guy is just hitting his 30's. He's got heart, and he's not as "soft" as people keep claiming he is. Is he a lock down

He is the most ridiculous owner ever. Why does he come to the games all the time? To see them lose badly in the playoffs apparently. I hate the douchebag. How did he ever buy this team. Why did he buy the team? How many other owners come to the games. He should stop coming to them because I swear he is jinxing them.
First, before I make my post I would like to say I respect Mavericks fans and the team for the way you guys handled the series against my Heat in 06-- My words are not at all to trash your team it is just soley what I think in regards to the situation you guys are in at the pres
Hi Mavericks Fans,, just had to ,, let it be known that,, I heard that Avery Johnson was fired earlier this week..,, that upset me a bit.
All I have to say is Avery Johnson is perhaps one of the best coaches I have seen.,, He is not a quitter like Pat Riley or Phil Jackson,, leaves then comes back.
Sorry to invade your board but I have to let this out. I need to rub this in Jason Kidd's face. He is a whiny little baby who when he doesn't get what he wants he cries and moans or takes games off (this seasons mysterious "migraine" before the
