Overview

Rated among the top three defensive ends in the junior college ranks, the Scottsdale Community College product did not live up to his lofty expectations during his two seasons with the Wildcats.

With his size and quickness, Arizona coaches were hoping to unleash a pass rushing demon, especially after he produced 16 sacks and 40 stops for losses at Scottsdale. But he combined for just six sacks and 10 ½ tackles behind the line of scrimmage at UA.

Holmes traveled quite a bit during his football career, which began in the Memphis high school system. He moved to Florida and attended Dillard High School as a senior, where he competed on the defensive line and at tight end. He originally committed to Ohio State after his prep playing days, but was ruled academically ineligible.

Holmes spent the 2003 season at Brighton Academy, a prep school in Maine. He then enrolled at Scottsdale College, earning All-Western States Football League, All-Region I and NJCAA All-American honors during his two seasons at the school. In two seasons at Scottsdale, he registered 192 tackles, along with 16 sacks and 40 stops for losses.

Before 2005 spring camp at Scottsdale CC, Holmes was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence stemming from criminal damage at a north Scottsdale home. At that time he was also ordered to complete an anger management class and to have "no uninvited contact" with the woman involved in the incident, court documents state.

In 2006, Holmes enrolled at Arizona during the spring semester. He had arrived on campus in December, 2005, but needed to fulfill academic requirements. In August, he pleaded guilty to "excessive vehicle music" coming from his black 2006 Hummer and paid a $113 fine. That year, he started nine of 12 games at right defensive end. He ranked eighth on the team with 36 tackles (25 solos), adding four sacks and five stops for losses. He caused two fumbles and had a pair of pass break-ups.

As a senior, Holmes shifted to strong-side defensive end in spring drills. He was arrested in July on charges of criminal damage and disorderly conduct. He allegedly punched a patron of the Pussycat Lounge and ripped the blazer of a doorman as he was escorted out of the club, according to a Scottsdale Police Department report.

Holmes was still allowed to play for the Wildcats in 2007 and never faced any type of suspension from the coaching staff. His work ethic and performance was less than stellar in his final season, as he finished ninth on the team with 37 tackles and had just two sacks and 5 ½ stops for losses, despite starting 10 of the 12 games he played in.

In 24 games at Arizona, Holmes started 19 contests. He recorded 73 tackles (49 solos) with six sacks for minus-37 yards, 10 ½ stops for losses of 46 yards and six quarterback pressures. He caused two fumbles, recovered another and deflected a pair of passes.

Analysis

Positives: Has a lean, angular frame, but shows good muscle development, excellent arm length, large hands and thick thighs and calves … Durable athlete who will play through pain … Hard worker in the training room … Runs with a normal stride and shows steady acceleration chasing down outside running plays, generating a short-area burst that lets him chase down ballcarriers from behind … Flashes good initial quickness and body control coming out of his stance … Plays with good aggression, but is prone to reckless performances and needs to keep his emotions in check better … His body frame is still developing and with his straight-line quickness, he might be a better fit as an under-tackle, if he can add at least another 30 pounds to his frame (has room to carry that additional bulk) … Needs to be more active with his hands, especially when it comes to shedding, but has the hand strength and punch to put offensive linemen back on their heels … Not the most instinctive player you will find, but when he battles along the line, he is quick to locate the ball and close … Lacks pass rush skills, but has some success on the bull rush due to his ability to take angles … Adequate wrap-up tackler whose hand strength will generally stop the ballcarrier's forward progress once Holmes locks on to the opponent … Needs to develop a better array of pass rush moves, but his rip move has good force for him to get an edge on the offensive lineman … Uses his long reach and leaping ability to create problems for quarterbacks, as he gets a fair share of pass deflections at the line of scrimmage … While the production is not there, he does play with good effort (just lacks instincts) … When he keeps his hands active to fend off blocks, he is quick to shed and make plays on the ball in front of him.

Negatives: Flashes initial quickness and body control, but appears a bit stiff when having to redirect suddenly (has better lateral agility when he flows down the line) … Has good speed off the edge, but does not show the explosiveness and lower leg drive to split double teams (better working on the edge than when in-line) … Struggles to digest the playbook and shows marginal read-and-react ability (will close in a hurry when he locates the ball, but is slow to see the play develop) … Shows willingness to study the game, but needs more than normal reps to retain plays … Doesn't show good character off the field, and on it his emotions and lack of maturity will get him in trouble with the refs … Has had problems with academics throughout his career and it is more because he fails to apply himself than it being a learning disability … Flashes toughness and aggressiveness on the field, as well as the ability to be physical, but he gets reckless and tries to out-battle blockers rather than trying to avoid … Not always quick to locate the ball and recognize the play, and when he makes a bad play he will shut down and not give much of an effort for long stretches … Lacks leadership skills and could be a bit of a locker room lawyer … Gets off the ball late at times and only flashes lateral quickness and the ability to redirect (not sudden with his change of direction, but can flow when on the move) … Occasionally shows strength at the point-of-attack to control and shed his opponent, but too often will get turned and driven back, unable to recover because he fails to use his hands properly … Generally uses lateral movement to disengage from blocks, but doesn't show the instincts to battle the double-team or the strength to control it … Flashes the ability to uses his hands to shed blockers, but overall has limited technique … Slow to fight pressure and struggles to recover when blockers get into his body … Looks stiff in the hips and only shows flashes of straight-line speed … Can hit, wrap up and drag down the ballcarrier, but is not quick to redirect and accelerate to make the tackle in space … Will engage his blocker and push the pocket, but is not explosive off the edge … Doesn't show much hand usage or technique to defeat his opponent when rushing the quarterback … Shows effort and desire to close on the passer when he comes free, but when he gets too tall in his stance blockers have good success pushing him away from the pocket … Does not have the counter moves to react when a blocker latches on to him … Does not have the leg drive needed to generate a strong anchor.

Compares To: KALIMBA EDWARDS-Oakland … Detroit finally tired on waiting for Edwards to live up to his potential, letting him slip out of town and sign with Oakland. Holmes lacks the tall frame that Edwards has, but both have a ton of potential and little in the way of production to show for it in recent years. Holmes has to mature off the field, as he could rival Pacman Jones in off-field issues if he doesn't get his act together soon. Someone will take him late in the draft based on potential, but if he played anywhere up to that ability while at Arizona he could have been a first-day pick.
