Overview

Aptly nicknamed "Art-o-matic" by his coaches and teammates, Carmody's consistency on field goals and placements saw him end his career as the NCAA's kick scoring record holder with 433 points. The holder of virtually every school kicking record, he also holds the college football career record by being successful on 95.45 percent of his overall kicks (255-of-257 PATs, 60-of-73 field goals) during his time with the Cardinals.

While small in stature, Carmody stands tall on the football field, having scored in each of the 49 games he played in. Only Mason Crosby of Colorado (50, 2003-06) and Billy Bennett of Georgia (50, 2000-03) stood ahead of the Louisville kicker in that category in NCAA annals.

Carmody was a two-time All-District and All-City kicker at Loyola College Prep. He made 8-of-11 field goals as a senior, including a 45-yarder, and was a perfect 28-of-28 on extra points, earning All-State honors that year. He went 10-1 as a pitcher on the baseball team and batted .400 with 37 runs batted in as a junior, picking up All-State and two-time All-City accolades in baseball.

After having his first collegiate field goal try vs. Kentucky blocked at Louisville in 2004, he went on to set the NCAA, Big East Conference and school record for consecutive extra points made with 77 and went 12-of-15 on field-goal attempts. Carmody ranked second in the nation in scoring amongst kickers, finishing with 113 points as a true freshman.

In 2005, Carmody ranked third in the Big East by making 14-of-16 field goals and also placed third in the league in scoring with 105 points, making 63-of-65 PATs in the process. He was good on all five field-goal tries from 40 yards or longer. He also kicked off 28 times for a distance average of 61.4 yards, with four resulting in touchbacks.

As a junior, Carmody was named All-Big East Conference first-team, adding All-American honors while capturing the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation's top place-kicker. He ranked fourth in the nation in scoring among all players with 123 points and finished fifth nationally by connecting on 21-of-25 field goals. He was also successful on all 60 extra point attempts.

A bulging disc in his back hampered Carmody during the 2007 preseason and carried over into the regular schedule. He made just 13-of-17 field goals and all 53 conversions. His 92 points scored was the lowest season output for his career.

In 49 games at Louisville, the NCAA's kick scoring record-holder amassed 433 points on 60-of-73 field goals (82.19 percent) and 255-of-257 PATs (99.22 percent). He made an NCAA record 95.45 percent of his total kicks (315-of-330). He also kicked off 32 times for an average distance of 60.9 yards, with five attempts that were ruled touchbacks and one other that went out of bounds.

Analysis

Positives: Despite his size, this left-footed kicker has excellent accuracy and good leg strength (untested on long-range field goals, though) … Extremely accurate and level-headed player who is never rattled in pressure situations … Gets good leg extension and follow-through, showing the balance and hip flexibility to drive through the ball, but needs to pick up the pace in his approach to prevent potential blocked kicks at the next level … Thrives on pressure, having ice water running through his veins, but has just one game-winning kick to his credit … Excels in the classroom and is a hard worker with no off-field issues … Generates good initial explosion behind his kicks, getting excellent height and trajectory, as most of his kicks simply sail over the cross bar … Before 2007 (possible back issue), he averaged 1.38 seconds on field goals (quickness of kick average was 1.47 seconds in 2007) … Gets good rise on the ball once it leaves his foot, generally seeing his placements attain very good height to easily go over the cross bar (four of his five blocked kicks during his career were due to protection breakdowns) … Has enough leg power and position skills to kick in poor weather conditions … Maintains concentration when approaching the ball and is never distracted.

Negatives: Demonstrates excellent accuracy and good leg strength for field goals, but does not have a strong enough leg to handle kickoff chores, having been relieved of that duty in each of his four seasons with the team … Lacked power behind his kicks as a senior (possible residual from an off-season bulging disc in his back) … That loss of leg strength might warrant further medical evaluation of his back … Has an under-developed, frail-looking frame, making him a liability as a tackler on the coverage unit … Will never be a threat to run with the ball on fake field goal/PAT attempts, as he lacks quickness or a balanced running stride … Takes a bit of a deliberate approach to the ball and will have to hasten it to play at the next level, in order to prevent his kicks from potentially being blocked … His inability as a kickoff specialist will force a team to either sacrifice field position or a roster spot for another kicker to handle those chores … Despite his leg strength, he is really untested as a long-range kicker, as has attempted just two field goals from 50 yards or longer during his career.

Compares To: DAVID AKERS-Philadelphia … Coincidentally, Carmody spends his offseason training with Akers. He is nowhere near the kickoff artist that the Eagle is, but he has the same approach on all his other kicking duties. He is not a typical kicker who needs special treatment, and despite his size will work out with teammates in the training room. His accuracy is evident by his record-breaking scoring, but you just wish that he attempted more long-range field goals to get a true test of his leg strength, which is not obvious on kickoffs.

Injury Report
