Overview

Radovich's versatility was invaluable to the Trojans the last two years.

When injuries forced offensive tackle Sam Baker to the sideline for half of the 2007 campaign, Radovich stepped in to fill the leadership role. Even though he excelled in his new role of blocking along the edge, professional scouts feel that his pass-blocking skills and ability to reach the second level on pulls and traps are better suited for playing offensive guard at the next level.

A teammate of USC quarterback Mark Sanchez at Mission Viejo High School, where they were tutored by renowned coach Bob Johnson, the father of former Trojans and NFL quarterback Rob Johnson. He would go on to earn Parade, Super Prep, Prep Star, Student Sports, Riddell Footwear and Tom Lemming All-American first-team honors as a senior.

Radovich was also named to the Prep Star Top 100 Dream Team, The Sporting News Hot 100, FOX Sports 50, Super Prep All-Farwest, Prep Star All-West, Tom Lemming All-West, Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West, Tacoma News Tribune Western 100, Orange County Register Fab 15, Cal-Hi Sports All-State squads. He was selected Cal Hi Sports Lineman MVP, All-CIF Southern Section, All-CIF Division II, Los Angeles Times All-Star and All-Orange County, and Orange County Register All-Orange County as an offensive and defensive lineman that year.

As a junior, Radovich garnered Cal-Hi Sports All-State Underclass, All-CIF Division II and Orange County Register All-Orange County honors. That year, he helped Mission Viejo compile a 14-0 record, as the team won the CIF Division II championship in both 2001 and '02.

Even though his father, Mark, was a standout linebacker at Arizona State (1974-76), Radovich enrolled at Southern California in 2003, spending the season performing on the scout team at both left offensive tackle and guard. He appeared as a reserve at both positions in 10 games during the 2004 season, missing the UCLA clash after suffering a right hip strain in the Notre Dame clash.

The following season, he appeared briefly in three games before he was forced to undergo right hip surgery. The surgery forced him to sit out 2006 spring drills, but he returned in the fall, moving into the starting lineup at left offensive guard. That season, he delivered 70 knockdowns and eight touchdown-resulting blocks while allowing just two quarterback sacks in 13 contests.

Radovich was again on the move as a senior, taking over right offensive tackle chores during the team's final 12 games. He earned All-Pac 10 Conference honorable mention, as he was credited with an 82.6 percent grade for blocking consistency while coming up with 88 knockdowns and 13 touchdown-resulting blocks. He also allowed 4 ½ sacks on 460 pass plays.

Analysis

Positives: Stout athlete with semi-heavy feet, good hand usage and placement, good upper-body mass, thick chest, broad shoulders and adequate lower-body muscle definition … Plays with good field vision and alertness, showing a nasty streak in his play … Builds his acceleration steadily when out in front on pulls and shows good balance on initial contact to stay with blocks … Shows good strength and the ability to keep his feet blocking in the short area … Quick out of his stance and shows good hand usage locking on to steer and control his man … Has good intelligence, quickly spotting the stunts and blitz … Hard worker and self-starter in the training room and puts in the extra hours studying film … Shows confidence in his level of play and is a respected team leader … Has the initial step to gain advantage off the snap and engages with hands properly inside his framework … Might lack overall timed speed, but his initial quickness and technique puts him in the right place to block most of the time … Delivers a strong hand punch to shock and jolt coming out of his stance and has the upper-body power to generate movement off the ball … Once he punches, extends or grabs, he is effective at neutralizing his man … In the short area, he keeps his feet in attempts to position and wall off, doing a nice job of maintaining contact throughout the play … Flashes good hand strength to finish and plays with a good base to fire off the ball … On drive blocks, he keeps his pad level down to gain movement, demonstrating the solid base and anchor to gain position … Has the feet to reach his block point in the short area … Can cave a physical defensive lineman when he gets physical with his hands and combines that with good leg drive to leverage … Has the functional foot speed and balance to mirror blocking in-line in pass protection and is very alert to picking up stunts … His wide base allows him to slide and mirror, compensating for a lack of hip snap when taking on double moves … Flashes a better hand punch in pass protection than on drive blocks, using them to control his man without having to hold too much and is good at keeping his hands inside … Recognizes games up front and even though he appears heavy-footed running long distances, he can slide and protect the pocket.

Negatives: Will play through pain, but previous hip surgery has robbed him of fluid lateral range and change-of-direction agility, which causes him problems taking on the speedier edge rushers (see 2007 Washington, Stanford and Arizona games), making him a better fit blocking in-line at guard than being isolated on the edge at tackle … Better blocking at the line of scrimmage, as he is too inconsistent in attempts to engage and adjust to movement blocking in space … Would be even more effective with his hand punch if he could generate a better hip roll … Will sometimes try to overpower his man rather than finesse, resulting in some lunging and overextension due to marginal hip snap … Better blocking at the line, as he fails to take good angles when asked to get into the second level … Gets too tall in his stance working in space and will get reckless with his hand punch trying to recover vs. the speedier edge rushers … Can stay on his feet, but when he puts his head down, his recovery skills are very unstable.

Compares To: CHRIS COOPER-Denver … Like Cooper, Radovich has experience at both guard and tackle, but due to previous hip problems, he is too inconsistent getting to the second level or redirecting to handle speedier edge rushers. He shows good initial quickness blocking in-line and a strong hand punch to sustain blocks. When he keeps his pads down, he is very effective at widening the rush lane. He has the balance to mirror interior defenders in attempts to protect the pocket and his solid anchor makes it difficult for the opponent to push him back much. He is more likely a better fit at guard because of a lack of ideal hip roll, but he will have some problems neutralizing linebackers on pulls and traps if he has to move long distances.

2005: Sat out the team's final 10 games (medical hardship) after undergoing right hip surgery (9/24) that would force him to also sit out the 2006 spring practices.
