The San Francisco 49ers officially signed RB DeShaun Foster on Monday. Foster spent his first five seasons with the Carolina Panthers, rushing for 3,336 yards and 10 touchdowns in 63 games. The former second-round pick from UCLA will be a backup to Frank Gore in San Francisco, and provides depth for coach Mike Nolan. Despite setting a career-high in carries and starts in 2007, Foster ended up with 876 rush yards on 247 carries (3.5 avg., a solid half-yard lower from a year ago and a full yard shorter from two years ago). He added three rushing touchdowns but has just one 100-yard rushing effort. In the passing game, Foster picked up 25 receptions for 182 yards (7.3 avg.) with a touchdown. (Updated 03/03/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
At best, he'll be a nice insurance policy for those owners who draft Gore in the first round of Fantasy drafts this summer. Think late-round pick with Foster. (Updated 03/03/2008).
