Chillar headed to Packers: The Green Bay Packers agreed to a two-year, $5.4 million deal with free-agent LB Brandon Chillar. Chillar's agent, Jim Ivler, said Wednesday the contract contains incentives that could raise its overall value to $6.4 million. Chillar started 41 games over the last four seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He is expected to compete in Green Bay with incumbent strong side LB Brady Poppinga for the starting job. "I won't say that they committed to a role, but based upon my confidence in my client, I believe he'll compete for the starting job," Ivler said. Chillar is the first free-agent signing this offseason by the Packers, who have taken a restrained approach to spending money on the market under general manager Ted Thompson. (Updated 03/19/2008).

Fantasy Analysis
Chillar will add depth to the Packers linebackers, but don't plan on using him much in IDP leagues. (Updated 03/19/2008).
SLB Brandon Chillar is an upgrade over starter Brady Poppinga in pass coverage, which has been an Achilles' heel on an otherwise solid defense. They split the first-team reps in offseason drills. More of the same can be expected in the preseason until a clear-cut winner emerges to round out a linebacker corps oozing with star potential in Nick Barnett and A.J. Hawk. 07/17/2008
