LB Vilma headed to Saints: A deal sending Jets LB Jonathan Vilma to the Saints for a conditional draft choice has been completed. The teams reached a tentative agreement Thursday night, with the Jets getting a conditional draft pick, probably in 2009, based on Vilma's performance. In his first two years as a Jet, Vilma seemed destined for stardom. He was NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2004 and a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005. But in 2006, when Eric Mangini became coach and installed a 3-4 scheme, Vilma's production dropped. He played seven games in 2007 before a knee injury sidelined him. Vilma had surgery to remove bone fragments from his knee in November. (Updated 02/29/2008).
Injury Report
Knee - Questionable for the start of 2008 training camp (Updated - 1/8/08)
Fantasy Analysis
It appears Vilma will be playing with New Orleans in 2008, which is a positive since he will leave the Jets and a system that wasn't to his liking. The Saints run a 4-3 scheme. Look for Vilma to bounce back with the Saints (if healthy), and he should now be considered a viable Fantasy option again in IDP leagues in 2008. Think middle- to late-round pick with Vilma. Who is on the verge of getting paid after the 2008 season? Dave Richard lists the players in a contract year and notes why they're worth targeting in drafts this summer.
Sedrick Ellis and Tracy Porter, the New Orleans Saints' top two draft picks, remained unsigned and absent while the rest of the team reported to training camp Wednesday.
