Fitzpatrick impressing for Bengals: Cincinnati backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has impressed in the preseason, reports the team's official website. Coaches have tabbed him Carson Palmer's backup for 2008 and Fitzpatrick believes more could be in store for his career. "I've made great progress since my rookie year in terms of understanding the game more and more and now I think I'm at the point I'm very comfortable saying that I can start in this league," Fitzpatrick said after Wednesday's practice. The Harvard graduate has shown that smarts are highly underrated when it comes to being a successful NFL quarterback. He's got a 109 quarterback passer rating thus far in the preseason and has shown he can beat NFL defenses.

Fitzpatrick became only the fifth NFL QB in history to throw for over 300 yards in his debut when he was on the Rams back in 2005. He'll find himself behind center starting football games in this league at some point, but 2008 probably won't be that point. With Palmer healthy, Fitzpatrick won't see the field. If Palmer gets hurt, however, Fitzpatrick could be a nice sleeper pickup off the waiver wire.
