Holmgren's West Coast offense favors playmaking tight ends. In fact, shortly after the Seahawks plucked Carlson, ESPN analyst and former West Coast quarterback supreme Steve Young said during the broadcast: "You have to have one."
Carlson could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts. He would appear to have the opportunity to start quickly for last year's NFC West winners. He joins a Seattle tight end corps that includes returning backup Will Heller, free-agent signee Jeb Putzier and Joe Newton, a practice-squad rookie a year ago.
Irish commodities still lingering on the draft boards are safety Tom Zbikowski and center John Sullivan, but both were likely second-day picks to begin with and should be getting a phone call on Sunday.
