Reid's son admits smuggling drugs into jail, sent to state prison

NORRISTOWN, Pa. -- Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid's son was sent to state prison after admitting he smuggled 89 prescription pills into a county jail.

Garrett Reid pleaded guilty to drug smuggling charges on Wednesday and faces a minimum of two years in state prison.

The 25-year-old Reid, however, could be released earlier to a less restrictive facility if he is accepted into a drug-treatment program, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.

Reid is already serving time in the county jail for a heroin-fueled car crash that injured a motorist. Jail officials say he smuggled the pills inside when he surrendered last fall, just before his guilty plea to crash-related charges.

"While we understand that some defendants, this one in particular, have substance-abuse issues, he still committed a very serious offense," Ferman said. "We need to take a very hard line on crimes like this to make sure that prison authorities can maintain order."

Reid once told probation officers that he was an addict who had gotten a thrill selling drugs in inner-city Philadelphia.

He entered his plea Wednesday before Judge Steven O'Neill, who last year questioned Andy and Tammy Reid's supervision and compared their home to a "drug emporium."

Another son, Britt Reid, 23, is in a county drug-court program after pleading guilty that same day to separate drug and gun charges.

The Reids later spoke publicly of their many attempts to get their sons in treatment, and the toll it had taken on their family. They have three other children.

Garrett Reid's formal sentencing on the smuggling charge is on hold while he is considered for the treatment program. He is serving a sentence of up to 23 months on the earlier charges.

Defense lawyer Timothy Woodward did not return phone calls Wednesday seeking comment.

The kid needs prison time, obviously he's the kid who grew up wealthy and was never told no by anyone that was around him.  If we only knew how many people are charged daily for the same crap, send him away and let him grow up.

I think Donovan set these kids up. He just wanted to take the lime light off Eli for being a superbowl winning MVP QB! Plus he was tired of giving the following interviews.

Q: Dono why do you bring crutches to the game when your not even hurt?

A: Just in case.

Q: What happen to you guys why are u so bad?

A: TO left and the guys I throw to know can't catch tho ...(more)

Seriously. This is the SON of an NFL coach. Not the coach. His son. Yeah, is his son in some serious trouble? Of course. But this has nothing to do with sports, whatsoever. Andy Reid is not a movie star or an actor, but ESPN and other media is turning his family problems into a media soap opera, then tying it into sports by asking lines like "how do the players feel about this" and "will emotions ...(more)

He did have a legal prescription for pain killers because of a football injury.  I think that is what got him hooked on the drugs.

Why does this even have to be a story anyway.  so his kids have some problems, im sure he is not the only parent in the world who has bad kids. there are other families in the world that have the same problems and get less attention.  i just wish they would leave Andy Ried and his family be and let him deal with it on his own.

Well, what do you know, another high profile family having drug problems, and instead of blaming the child, we right away blame Andy for this. What a joke! This is like the Jerry Springer Show in Philly. The problem with this is that the Judge actually had it right, the kids are running the parents, namely Andy, instead of hime having control of the kids. The ones hurt through all of this are the ...(more)

regardless of how you feel about this story, you must admit that there is no quit in these boys of Andy Reid's.  If they had the passion for football that they do for using drugs, Im sure their dad could use them on the Eagles.  I just cant believe this guy snuck drugs into a jail.  It is like if Mike Vick had some pit bull ...(more)
