Three-time champ McGinest to make 15th season his last

CLEVELAND -- Browns linebacker Willie McGinest says the 2008 season will be his last.

McGinest told SI.com that he wants to finish his career on one last playoff run.

"This will be it," he said. "This will be my 15th season. I've worked hard; I think I've done everything I set out to accomplish."

McGinest, who played 12 seasons and won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Browns in 2006, reuniting him with his former defensive coordinator, Romeo Crennel.

In two seasons with Cleveland, McGinest hasn't been the pass-rushing threat that he was with the Patriots. He has seven sacks and 107 tackles in 27 games for the Browns.

He had 78 sacks with New England, set the record for most postseason sacks with 16 and the single-game playoff record with 4.5 in a 2006 wild-card win over Jacksonville.

"I have no regrets or no qualms about my career," McGinest said in a story that appeared on the website Tuesday night. "I've done everything a football player can do and I've done it more than once."

Willie you go until you feel like you got everything out of your system.  This was a good decision to come back because I think the Browns might have a good shot at the afc this season.

Willie definitely has lost a step, and it was evident when he had Big Ben in his sights during the Steelers game in Pitt last year, and he could not keep the angle up to bring him down.  What he can provide is being a mentor for the younger players, and he can instruct them as a player to a player on the work that goes into being an e ...(more)

As a Patriots fan, I always loved Big Willie Mac and I was sad to see him leave the team.  The unfortunate part of his departure from the team is that the Patriots did try to re-sign him for what he was worth due to his advanced age and his dropping stats.  Big Willie was smart - left with his rings, and went to another team.&n ...(more)

If you cant close in on a QB in the backfield thats a sign to both management to go with 36 candles that youre done. Blah blah blah yes he was a great player but he already has his 3 rings and the good of the team should still come before any veteran.

With his so-so declining play the only reason he made that retirement statement is because he feels the axe closing in on him, which coul ...(more)

He is one of our all time favorites here, we wish he would come back for one more season with the Pats.

Great player in his day, but I haven't noticed him since he left New England. Great move by him......pulled a Damien Woody and got paid after winning the big game. I hope he has a productive last season. The Browns could use a decent pass rush to go along with a strong o ...(more)

Maybe Willies retirement after the season will motivate the Browns to win one for him, somehwhat like the Steelers in Bettis' last season. (even though Willie Mac already had 3 rings...)  I guess this is just wishful thinking.
