Chiefs report: Inside slant
They went through three kickers in 2007 without falling in love with any of them. Maybe it's not surprising then, to see the Chiefs looking at three more lightly known candidates for their kicker's job in 2008. After a year in which Kansas City cut '07 fifth-round draft pick Justin Medlock after one game, then tried to get by with Dave Rayner and aging John Carney, the Chiefs will take a look at two other NFL castoffs and an undrafted rookie in 2008. The leading contender, if NFL experience is any factor, would appear to be Billy Cundiff, who played on and off for four seasons with Dallas (2002-05). He is best known for kicking a then-record seven field goals in a Monday night game against the Giants in 2003. He was released in 2005 after missing two critical field goals in a loss to Carolina. Cundiff last played briefly for New Orleans as a kickoff specialist in 2006. For his career he's hit 60 of 83 field-goal attempts for 72.3 percent. He is only 21 of 38 from 40 or more yards. His competition will include Nick Novak, who kicked in 16 games from 2005 through '07 with Arizona (2005) and Washington (2006-07). He's converted 13 of 20 career field goals. If either of those two NFL kickers fails to pan out, Kansas City also will look at North Carolina kicker Connor Barth, an undrafted rookie who in four seasons with the Tar Heels converted 54 of 71 career attempts with 14-of-20 accuracy from 40 to 49 yards.
