Trade makes Ellis a starter: The St. Louis Blues acquired goaltender Chris Mason from the Nashville Predators for a fourth-round pick in Friday's draft. The 32-year-old Mason played in a career-high 51 games for the Predators last season, posting a 2.90 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage. "Acquiring Chris really solidifies our goaltending position which was one of our goals going into this weekend," Blues president John Davidson said in a statement. "We are looking forward to a big day today at the draft." Nashville has two picks each in the first, second and fourth rounds. The team also agreed with goalie Dan Ellis on a multi-year deal. Fantasy Analysis
Ellis had a great year with the Predators. He went 23-10-3 with a 2.34 GAA. He also had six shutouts and a .924 save percentage. He opened the 2007-08 season as a backup to Mason, but when he struggled, Ellis stepped in and eventually become the favorite. This is the second year in a row Nashville dealt their starting goalie. Before last season, Nashville traded Tomas Vokoun to the Panthers so Mason could start in net. Ellis is a minor-league journeyman who really got his first taste of NHL life in 2007-08. The fact Nashville kept their two previous starters on a short leash, doesn't bode well for Ellis if he starts to struggle. Consider Ellis a No. 2 Fantasy goalie on Draft Day. (Updated 06/20/2008).
