The Carolina Hurricanes had a group of young forwards who started making inroads during the final months of the season. Don't expect to see all of them with next season's team.

The Hurricanes are still in the business of shoring up their defense, and so they'll find some of their forwards expendable. That could mean that Ryan Bayda and/or Keith Aucoin will be playing elsewhere next season even though they proved themselves as valuable players during key stretches.

But if several players who missed considerable time with injuries during the past season are back to form as expected -- such as Justin Williams and Matt Cullen -- the Hurricanes will have a surplus of forwards.

Chad LaRose returned from a broken leg and with it came his energy. The Hurricanes probably are inclined to keep him in the fold, particularly because he's a link to the 2006 championship team. It might be hard to find NHL-level roles for both Wade Brookbank and Tim Conboy.

All this means the most off-season additions to the organization likely would come on defense. Some of the aforementioned players could stay with nice roles with the Hurricanes if an established forward were traded for a defenseman.

The Hurricanes should like their flexibility in this area. But that doesn't mean the decisions will come easy.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
Forward Chad LaRose's hat trick in the second-to-last game of the season. LaRose, a popular fourth-line player on the team's 2006 championship roster, had just returned from a broken leg. His outburst helped Carolina beat Tampa Bay and control its playoff destiny, though the Hurricanes would squander that opportunity.

TURNING POINT
From Christmas through mid-January, the Hurricanes lost their once-sturdy grip on the Southeast Division. They dropped 10 of 14 games as players went down due to injury and illness.

Guess what "Caniacs," all those predictions about how the Capitals would need a monumental collapse by the Hurricanes to make it into the playoffs just went out the window. I guess I'll make my point once again, it's tough to avoid the criticism you guys bring upon yourse ...(more)

On the status of coach Peter Laviolette, Rutherford reiterated his "everyone is under review" stance from earlier in the season.  While he praised the team's style of play under Laviolette, Rutherford was somewhat critical of the decision to hurry injured player ...(more)

Welcome to your new home for the next 3 years maybe more Sergei Samsonov!

The feel good story of the NHL is complete, Sergei gets a 3 year contract with the Canes.  It is great to see him here and the fans have loved to watch him play.  With that being said, who is going to get traded from some D-men

I'm still so mad about the Canes late season swoon, I can't even watch the playoffs.

How does a team that was leading the division for 90% of the season manage to find some way of screwing it up?

Why did they look so flat and lost on the ice the last 2 games when they still had a chance to make it?

Why were the injured guys rushed back into the lineup too soon, ...(more)

What the f$%k is going on tonight? Even the broadcasters are picking up on it. Alexander Ovechkin is a little bit%h, he should've received a major cross-checking penalty when he took down Eric Staal after the whistle blew. Then he pretty much jumped Bret Hedica ...(more)

Thank you Capitals for defeating Florida 3-1 and sparing us the horror of seeing the Hurricanes in the playoffs.  Thank you for sparing Carolina from a devastating first round sweep by Ottawa.  Thank you for getting our offseason started early.  Thank you for allowin ...(more)

It's the Hurricanes throwing up on themselves vs. Florida.  It's a shame the "Best Team in the East" will miss the playoffs unless the Caps lose tonight.  Then again, no it will not be a shame at all! Get your excuses ready Canes fans.  What was your best excuse for last night? The lights get in Ward's eyes on the ...(more)

Well Caniacs it has come down to the last 2 games to decide the Southeast division. I certainly do not want to make excuses, but the Caps had the refs in their pocket last night. The great thing about the last 2 games is that they are both at RBC. I really believe that with the electricity in the crowd, and the heart this team has showed, that we will prevail and claim the prize which is so rightf ...(more)

We need to have a great road game and come away with 1 or both points tonight.  I would prefer the 2 because we own all of the tie breakers but even 1 point puts the pressure on them to win out.  Canes are rested from the Friday night back to back games and so this needs to be a showcase of the CANES for the playoffs.  Look for Staal and Cole to have big games and for the defense ...(more)

Great energy last night.  They let up a bit in the second but Cam was sharp when he needed to be.

It's gonna be a tight fight for the division title. The Canes need to play with fire and intensity if they want to do it. Even though its tied from the point stand point. We lead by 1 game AND we OWN the tiebreaker! I'm confident we will be able to win the division and do some legit damage in the playoffs.

Washington had a big win last night, they are now within 2 points.  The Canes need to make a statement tonight and get the 2 points they need.  The magic number is 3 wins in the last 5 to clinch.

With 3 wins the Canes will have 94 points, that is the most the Caps can get if they win out.  Even if the Caps beat the Canes in their last head to head, the Canes hold the

Just want to how many of you think the Canes can hold on, they have played some gutsy hockey in the last few games and I think they have shown some mental toughness despite all of the adversity. Even if they don't go far, I think it's important for them to make the playoffs, it shows they are a good franchise and in the worst of times they can still make the show. During this stretch I think ...(more)
