The new look of the Flames is starting to take shape, and it appears the club will finally become younger and faster.

Defenseman Mark Giordano, who bolted for Russia last season instead of accepting a two-way contract, has reportedly re-signed with the team.

Giordano, who'll turn 25 before the season begins, can't officially ink a new pact until July 1, but has apparently agreed to a three-year deal.

He currently is part of Canada's World Championship team as an alternate.

Giordano played 55 NHL games over two seasons and collected seven goals and nine assists. He spent last season with Moscow Dynamo and netted four goals and nine helpers.

Most likely a fifth/sixth pairing defenseman, Giordano's excellent skating ability and touch of offense will help the team's second power play unit and he could play in the top four if necessary.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
A week into December, the Flames were floundering, sitting 13th in the Western Conference and struggling as they embarked on a six-game road trip.

True, the competition was hardly a who's who of the NHL -- Chicago, Florida, Tampa Bay, Carolina, St. Louis and Columbus, none of which made the playoffs -- but the Flames ran the table and returned home riding a six-game winning streak that vaulted them back into contention.

TURNING POINT
After taking two of the first three games in their best-of-seven playoff series with San Jose, the Flames were on the verge of taking a stranglehold of the series in Game 4

Despite being horribly out-shot, they had a 2-1 lead with five minutes remaining in regulation. But San Jose's Jonathan Cheechoo scored on a sharp-angled top-corner shot, and with 10 seconds remaining Joe Thornton redirected a point shot for the game-winning goal.

Instead of having three chances to earn that series-winning victory to advance to the second round of the playoffs, the Flames had lost momentum and the Sharks could taste victory.

Well, we lost in the first round for the third time in a row. We have an aging team, which is funny, it seems that we went from the "young guns" to a "veteran filled lineup" in the matter of a few years with nothing really to show for it. I am just wondering, do we blow it up? get rid of a few bad apples (Huselius, Tanguay)? or do we keep it the same as much as possible?

Well, our mini collapse down the stretch cost us the 6th seed. Fortunately we are in the playoffs and we have an opportunity to up set one of the favorites to win the cup. I would be lying if I said that this is who I wanted to face in the first round, but it is what it is, and we get to play San Jose.

What does everyone think of our chances? Why do you think (if you do) we will win the seri ...(more)

As a die hard Wild fan i have to say im pleased to see the league made things tough on your team with 4 road games to end a down to the wire finish for the divison look at this way you should still make the playoffs and maybe go  deep into them GOOD LUCK it should be exciting!

To hatemichigan and the others who responded to a post I had about a month ago, I watched the Flames play some more and watched some east coast teams.  I have to say the Flyers definitly take some questionable hits and shots at the opposing team and the ...(more)

(POLL) The frustration of Keenan is tangible. His problem is getting the Flames very talented team to be intense and fired up for 60 minutes. Who is actually responsible for this?

Looks like there is a good chance that 4 northwest teams could make the playoffs this year.  Seems to me that the Flames best first round matchup would be against the Wild.  Let Dallas or Detroit take on the Canuck ...(more)

I was just at the Ducks game that ended about one hour ago and the Flames could possibly be the dirtiest team in hockey.  I saw a post earlier about Godard and Keenan and I thought they were tame considering Keenan just yells and Godard fights, but Jerome Iginla, ...(more)

Now that we have Phaneuf, Kiprusoff, Iginla, and Regehr locked up for some time, what should happen next?

I think that there is lots of different ways to go with this team. Keep Lankow and get rid of Huselius, do the opposite of that and keep Huss and get rid of Lankow! Trade Tanguay for a centre? Trade Tanguay for prospects? there are lots of different things we could do. What do you think ...(more)

First off, I love Calgary hockey ....till this year. Going from a straight shooter like Sooter to

this jerk Kenan was bad enough. Then Kip pulls a minus-bono and goes bonzo with his

saves average. Then, to make things at least a bit "ok" my fav, Mr. Class...scores a bunch in

the first 30 games, now...he has gone silent. 10 games, and counting, and NO GOALS...is it

more of the Mikey cur ...(more)
