The Los Angeles Kings' not-so-surprising announcement that they are increasing season-ticket prices by an average of just under six percent next season was accompanied by a more surprising admission: the team is apparently losing more money than ever.

In spite of the 2004-05 NHL lockout, which owners claimed would stabilize teams' finances, the Kings claim to be operating in the red. They did not release figures, but before the lockout, they claimed to be losing between $8 million to $10 million per season.

The news didn't sit well with fans, particularly since the Kings haven't made the playoffs since 2002, and it seemed a bit incongruous to some, considering that ticket prices have increased slightly and payroll has decreased greatly since 2004.

"We're building our organization differently, to meet the reality that we're losing even more than we did before the lockout," Chris McGowan, the team's chief marketing officer, said. "We have to run a better business."

In part to help offset those financial woes, the Kings announced a "blended" season-ticket price increase of 5.66 percent. A small percentage of tickets inside Staples Center will decrease in price, while others will increase by up to 16 percent.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
On Nov. 10 at Staples Center, the Kings trailed Dallas 4-0 with less than eight minutes remaining in the third period. Facing elite goalie Marty Turco, the Kings scored five goals on their next six shots and took the lead when Ladislav Nagy scored a power-play goal with 2:07 remaining. The Stars tied the game on Mike Modano's power-play goal with 1:05 remaining, but Anze Kopitar scored 2:34 into overtime to give the Kings the remarkable 6-5 victory.

TURNING POINT
With victories in two of their previous three games, the Kings were inching toward respectability as they started a two-game road trip with a winnable game against Chicago on Dec. 12. Instead, the Kings suffered a dreadful 6-3 loss in which they were outshot 36-28. That game was the start of an eight-game losing streak that dropped the Kings to the bottom of the Western Conference for the rest of the season.

What are the Kings doing?  Shouldn't they be losing to keep the number 1 overall pick.  Now they have the same points as the Lightening with one more win.  I know, that sounds horrible but I have been a KIngs fan since birth.  I am now 36 and yet to see a Stanley Cup.  So, with the draft being so deep this ye ...(more)

We've got some nice young offensive talent: Kopitar, Frolov, Cammeleri and others (Boyle) plus some savvy veterans on defense like Blake and Vishnovsky... so is it just goaltending or are the players just not buying into the system?
I don't live in the market anymore so I can't watch them very often. Somebody please tell me if the problem is youth or is Crawford just a poser that got l

The Dallas Stars woke up and thrashed the Kings within an inch of their lives.  The CBS Glogger described it as
"this game looks an NHL team against a minor league team"but I'm not sure if ti was that close.  What a lesson

I know this has been another tough season to watch, but in my opinion there are some bright spots.  My question is do you guys have a favorite game that you watched this season.  Mine would be in the early part of November when the Kings hosted Dallas and it was 4-0 late in the third period.  I remember thinking to myself it ...(more)

Dallas Stars - no mercy, even with ex-King Asst Coach Dave Tippet (who I respect).  They could still fall out of the playoffs if they don't win again.
Phoenix Coyotes - even less mercy!  No disrespect to The Great One, but Phoenix has a roster full of whiners w

Just when you have a shot at the first pick in the draft - now you start to win?  Tampa Bay is decomposing before our eyes and our King record for futility is at stake here...

Dear Michael Hanzus - where have your goals been hiding all year?  A few more 2 goal games like today and we might have had a shot... nah!

Way to go Ice Berg (Ersberg)!  Holding D

So - I know that the Joe Thorton goal was pretty unstopable, but I'm not so sure about the Patrick Rissmiller goal... anybody wanna say that Dan Cloutier blew another one?  Or did he show heart by going over an challenging the Shark bench (and then giving up the Rissmiller goal)?

How did a goalie who is as good as Boucher seems to be, get to SJ when the Kings should have been on him like white on rice?

Ouch!  55 minutes of well played hockey and then the defense leaves the building... How will the Kings give away the next game?

I know, let's start Dan Cloutier again!  Ok, maybe he played really well for a guy playing his former team, the team

Considering that he withstood 34 shots and only let one in... Erik Ersberg looks like a good prospect - much better than Dan Cloutier's painful last gasps.  And a source of hope in a pretty hopeless springtime.  How good is that #1 draft pick looking ...(more)
