On the verge of what they thought would be the Game 5 victory that turned the Eastern Conference semifinals in their favor, the Rangers instead were eliminated from the playoffs Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh.

Believing they would be heading back to a frenzied Madison Square Garden to take on a rattled bunch of young Penguins in a Monday night Game 6, the Rangers instead embark on an off-season of difficult decisions.

Unlike a year ago, when their first-round sweep of Atlanta and tight second-round series with Buffalo constituted an undeniable step forward for the franchise, Rangers brass must evaluate whether the current group has stalled.

"I think the expectations after they signed 'Gomer' and 'Dru', it was very high," Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr said of the July 1, 2007, free-agent signings of centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. "Probably, we didn't play very well the first half of the season. But we still played very well when we needed to -- especially the last 20 games when we needed to make the playoffs. And even in the playoffs.

"It wasn't good enough. But probably the expectations were higher than what we did this year."

GM Glen Sather has been on record as saying he wants to re-sign Jagr, whose contract expires June 30. But Jagr said after Sunday's game that he doesn't yet know whether he wants to return to the Rangers.

Resolving Jagr's status is Job One for the Rangers, since replacing him would be difficult and costly and might preclude upgrading the team in other needed areas, particularly on defense.

PENGUINS 3, RANGERS 2 (OT): Despite rallying from a 2-0 deficit on goals by rookies Lauri Korpikoski and Nigel Dawes early in the third, the Rangers fell Sunday afternoon in Mellon Arena on a goal 7:10 into overtime by Marian Hossa. For the second straight spring, the Rangers were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs.

Jagr, Avery, Straka, Shanahan, Roszival, Malik, Mara, Strudwick, Hutchinson, Valiquette are our free agents. I think this is the entire list unless we have Kasparitis. I think we own his rights, but it does not look like he will play. Jagr needs to stay. I have a feeling Avery is going to ask for a lot. He won't be able to stay. Straka stays if Jagr stays. Shanahan will stay. The ...(more)

I don't think his number should b retired. He had 2-3 good seasons with Rangers but not good enough to have a number retired

This series. This is not whining, as some jerk0ffs may claim i a doing in response. I am just commenting based on   facts, not my opinion.

The NHL doesn't have fan support and "numbers"  like other 3 major sports in the US. Nobody watches. . Sometimes, these games look more fixed by the REFS// JUDGES that the other dying sport.. boxing.

Jaromir Jagr said Tuesday that he would prefer to sign with the Rangers next season rather than with another NHL club and indicated that he wants to play two more years before returning to the Czech Republic.

OK, as I'm sure you have all noticed, our esteemed friends from the NY/NJ area seem to think that the refs were out to get them in this past series like some sort of boogie-man.  I've heard claims that the Rangers have been penalized 12 times for every penalty the Pens received.  The series was so one sided, a Rangers fan ...(more)

The 2008 hopes for the Rangers were pinned on their new acquisitions on offense, Drury and Gomez.  On paper their offense looked good, and it was pretty good.  Jagr stepped up in the playoffs, some others could have stepped up more.  Any way, prior to the season, Ranger fans were told that the Offense along with Lundquist we ...(more)

I know I sound like a wuss, but I want to apoligzie to the Rangers fans, I was caught up in the moment and I'm not a trash talker. I wish the rangers the best of luck in game 4 (don't think I don't want us to win) and the best of luck to Sean Avery

I just want  to congratulate the Rangers and their fans. It was a hell of a series and defineitley closer the the 4-1 series win indicated. Keep your heads high and see you next year.

The game isnt even over and everyone already knows that this board will be flooded with whiners, like every post game this series. Wahhh wahhh Crosby dives, wahhh wahhh Gill  and Laraque are bullies. Give me a break! Instead of whining about the Pens and the refs, man up and admit that it is very sad that the Rangers couldnt capitaliz ...(more)
