It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Olie Kolzig confirmed in Friday's Washington Post article that he won't be coming back next season.

Coach Bruce Boudreau basically sat him for the final six weeks of the season after a poor performance in a 5-0 loss to Chicago in mid-March. Kolzig didn't play a game in the seven-game playoff series with Philadelphia.

But it does leave some questions. There's no question that Kolzig was hurt by his treatment, which is understandable after being associated with a franchise for about 19 years and then thrown to the bench. Could it have been handled a different way?

And now who will be in goal? Backup Brent Johnson, who was relegated to No. 3 after the Cristobal Huet trade and never played again after the deal, is the only signed goalie on the team now. Will they have enough faith him Johnson to make him the backup?

And what about Huet? His agent said earlier this week that he loved his time in Washington. The question is whether the two sides can agree on some kind of contract.

The Caps don't always like to open their checkbooks, but they'd be foolish not to re-sign him. Huet gives the Caps something a bit different in goal, a keeper who's flexible, good with his stick and fits the forechecking first style that Boudreau likes to use. Let's see what happens.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
That's easy -- it was the night the Caps sealed the Southeast Division title by winning the final game of the season, at home against Florida, 3-1. The Caps simply had to win it -- and they did, capping a seven-game winning streak that carried them to the playoffs. After spending so much of the season near the bottom of the standings, here they were in the playoffs by winning the division. It was an amazing turnaround.

TURNING POINT
The Caps came in on a true high from edging out Carolina to win the division, but they didn't quite have the intensity for the playoffs. The Flyers took them to school a little, and even though the Caps rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force Game 7, they used up a lot of energy to get to that point.

I just read the article that Kolzig will not play for the Capitals again.  I saw this coming when they went with Huet down the stretch and in the playoffs.  Its really unfortunate how his career came to an end with the Caps.  I wish him the best!!

I want to start by saying: Thank you and congratulations Caps on a season that surpassed all expectations!

Next I want to talk about just how bright our future is.  It has been a long time, 10 years to be exact, since this team was one of the elite ones of the league.  Though we did not make it out of the 1st round, going all the way to game 7 has given our countless youngster ...(more)

What a bunch of classless chumps. You know, Philly gets a lot of crap for having idiot fans, but Cap fans really took the cake last night. After the Flyers hard-fought victory, beer cups, pizza boxes, hats, and other foriegn objects littered the ice (some landing on the players).

I feel bad for ...(more)

What do you think guys, Matt Cooke was great when it came to the dump and chance, that man will throw his body around in the corners.  Resigningn Matt and also Federov is very important, not to mention Huet.  I just hope he wants to be here.  I think we showed him in the playoffs that Washington can be a hockey tow ...(more)

How do we all feel about this series? As hot as the Caps have been the final few weeks, Philadelphia has been playing extremely well of late, and their goaltender Biron just shut out the Pens in the final game of the season. Philly has a bit more in the way of veteran experience than the Caps do (all apologies to Mr. Federov, he will need to continue to be a leader) but the Caps have one Alexan ...(more)

I don't care what people say, this was a great year for the Caps! It definately was a dissapointment to loose last night, but this definately will benefit us for years to come. Philly played a very good series playing playoff hockey driving to the net and putting pressure on Huet all series long, they got a couple more bounces I thought in the series, but thats how it works. Also, you have to work ...(more)
