The Players Championship at a glance

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -A brief look Sunday at the final round of The Players Championship:

Victor: Sergio Garcia (71) in a sudden-death playoff.

Spoils: Garcia earned $1.71 million, a five-year exemption on the PGA Tour and a three-year exemption to the Masters.

Runner-up: Paul Goydos (74)

Shot of the day: Garcia hit a wedge that stopped 4 feet from the hole on the island-green 17th to secure victory.

Waterlogged: Goydos was the first and last player of the tournament to hit into the water on No. 17.

Key statistic: Garcia had gone three years and 53 tour events without winning, the longest drought of his career.

Noteworthy: It was the first playoff at The Players Championship since 1987, the longest any PGA Tour event has gone without a playoff.

Quoteworthy: "I got beat. I played good golf. That doesn't mean you win. There's no defense. I can't tackle the little guy. There's no knee-capping. You have to accept the guy beat me." - Goydos.

Next year: No one in the 36-year history of The Players Championship has successfully defended his title.
