Defending champ Monaco advances in Austria; Fish loses

 

POERTSCHACH, Austria -- Defending champion Juan Monaco reached the second round of the Hypo Group International on Wednesday after Carlos Berlocq of Argentina retired with a thigh injury in the first set.

The second-seeded Monaco twice broke Berlocq's serve to lead 4-1 before he quit. Monaco will next play Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic.

In the second round, Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain upset fifth-seeded Sam Querrey of the United States 6-1, 6-3.

Igor Kunitsyn of Russia upset fourth-seeded Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-1 in the first round. After winning the opening game, the American lost 11 straight against the 96th-ranked Kunitsyn, who is now 2-0 against Fish.

Robby Ginepri of the United States fought off two match points before beating seventh-seeded Mario Ancic of Croatia 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8). The 96th-ranked American rallied from 3-0 in the third set and converted his second match point in the tiebreaker.

Eighth-seeded Robin Haase of the Netherlands beat Sergio Roitman of Argentina 7-6 (7), 6-4. Roitman missed a set point in the first set.

Also, Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia rallied to defeat Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3); Olivier Rochus of Belgium beat Michal Przysiezny of Poland 6-2, 6-4; and Dudi Sela of Israel beat Mischa Zverev of Germany 7-6 (2), 6-0 in a match that was suspended Monday because of rain.
